Use a Proper Hitch • Fifth wheels require a special hitch installed in the truck bed, securely attached to the truck’s frame—not just a bumper pull. 3. Distribute Weight Evenly • Proper loading reduces sway and stress on your vehicle. • Keep heavier items low and centered, and balance weight side to side. 4. Practice Driving • Turning, backing up, and braking take more space and time. • Practice in an open area to learn clearance, turning radius, and how the trailer tracks behind you. 5. Plan for Height & Length • Fifth wheel stands 13 feet tall—avoid hitting bridges or overhangs. • Watch for your total length—many parks and roads have limits (usually around 65 feet total). 6. Use Trailer Brake Controller • A brake controller synced with your truck is essential for safe, smooth braking, especially going downhill. 7. Do a Walk-Around Before Every Trip • Check: • Hitch locked and latched • Tires inflated and in good shape • Safety chains (if applicable) • Lights/brakes tested • Slides, jacks, and doors secured 8. Allow Extra Time and Space • Give yourself more time to accelerate, stop, and change lanes. • Always maintain a safe following distance—you’re hauling a lot of weight.
