Calgary is the largest city in Alberta and the fourth largest metropolitan area in Canada. Situated on the western edge of the Canadian Prairies region, it has long been a city focused on agriculture and ranching. More recently though, the city has grown thanks to the oil boom occurring farther north in the province, and with it have come a number of high tech jobs and corporate offices. Despite this, Calgary maintains the character of its rural past and feels like a much smaller city.
Visitors to Calgary have plenty of options for things to do. whether they’re fans of the outdoors, history buffs, shopaholics, or somewhere in between, there’s always something interested to see or do. It’s quickly become one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Canada outside the big three of Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto. As you tour the city, you might want to consider leaving your Calgary RV rental back at your campsite as the city has a rather developed public transportation system with light rail lines and numerous bus routes.
RV Parks near Calgary
When you book an RV in Calgary, it should be fairly easy to find parks ready to serve you in just about every direction from the city center. Calgary West Campground, just off Highway 1 and about 20 minutes from the city center, has a heated pool, mini golf, and a couple of nature trails to explore if you feel like doing some hiking. Sites with full hookups, just power and water, or no hookups at all are available. Mountain View Farm, about 20 minutes to the east of the city and near the town of Chestermere is another option. Here, there are sites with water and sewer, and various power amp choices are available along with group fire pit areas, mini golf, and a playground for the kids.
If you’re thinking about spending more time on the north side of the city, consider Balzac Campground RV Park, 20 minutes north of Calgary. They offer a variety of hookup levels and the park is also near to the CrossIron Mills Mall, one of the premier outlet shopping malls in the area.
Walmart stores are conveniently located 15 minutes north, south, east, and west of the city center if you need to pick up any extra provisions before heading to your campsite with the Calgary motorhome rental.
Exploring the City of Calgary
For being a city out in the middle of Canada’s expansive plains, Calgary has quite a lot to offer to its visitors. The city has several great museums including Gasoline Alley, the Military Museums, the Sports Hall of Fame, the Hangar Flight Museum, and the Glenbow. No matter what your interests are, be it vintage cars and planes or indigenous art, you’ll find something that piques your interest. If you’re bringing the little ones along for the Calgary, AB rental RV trip, and they’re animal lovers, you’ll surely want to make a trip to the Calgary Zoo. They have over 270 species of animals including hippos, gorillas, and penguins.
Due to the massive cattle drives that used to take place here, Calgary earned the nickname “Cowtown”. Nowhere is that remnant of the city’s history better displayed than at the Calgary Stampede. Every July, over a million visitors come to the city to witness one of the world’s largest rodeo events. In addition to the rodeo, there are concerts, excellent food, and plenty of parades to keep everyone entertained.
Craft beer fans will be delighted by the number of breweries in the city. The list of breweries could go on forever. Do your research and find the perfect IPA or sour to matches your personal palette, or just take a chance and see if one of their latest seasonal offerings is right up your alley.
Getting Outside near Calgary
If you’re just looking for a quick stroll or a good morning run route, look no further than the Calgary Pathway. The network of trails and concrete paths provides pedestrians and cyclists access to much of the city without having to deal with vehicle traffic. Another favorite hangout is Prince’s Island Park in the downtown area. The park is home to the city’s Canada Day celebration at the beginning of July along with the Calgary Folk Festival towards the end of the month. At other times of the year, it’s just a great place for a picnic, a brisk walk, or if visiting during the winter months, cross-country skiing.
Back in 1988, Calgary hosted the Winter Olympic Games. While many Olympic parks around the world sit vacant and become an eyesore for the city, Calgary has turned theirs into an adventure sports destination; it’s now possible to tour the repurposed facilities and try out some of the sports.
Canada’s most visited national park, Banff National Park, is a little over an hour from the city. This gem of a park features snow-capped peaks, azure-hued Lake Louise, and tons of great hiking trails. You could spend weeks enjoying all that the park has to offer-it’s that kind of freedom that you can appreciate when you rent an RV. If you’d prefer a park with fewer crowds, head a little farther west with the Calgary camper rental to Yoho National Park, about 30 minutes away from Banff. It’s a little less touristy and doesn’t have the same beautifully colored lakes, but the rugged mountains will still please any true outdoors lover.
