Meet "Merv," our retro 1980 campervan and the star of the show everywhere we go! Merv has been featured in marketing campaigns, social media ads, and even an indie movie, so don't be surprised if people take a second look as you cruise by. The best part of Merv is that you don't need to worry about hooking up a trailer, towing, or backing a rig in to your campsite—Merv drives like a regular van, so no special experience needed to enjoy your trip.We want you to be able to experience Merv like we do, so we include almost everything you need to hop in and make a mile: fresh bedding/pillows; two huge towels; comfy camping chairs; a small outdoor table; a large outdoor RV mat for the entrance; cooking accessories (pots/pans, plates/cutlery, hotdog sticks, etc.); cleaning supplies (hand sani, dish soap, etc.); and pet accessories (food/water bowls—please don't leave your furry friend in the vehicle alone at any time). Please note that the fridge runs primarily on power; although it's set up for propane, it is not always reliable this way, so if you don't have hookups where you are going, you may want to bring a cooler or add ours to your booking.Finally, we also include a custom-made bed extender/mattress that allows you to sleep lengthwise instead of widthwise (it is set up in the pictures on here). It was a game-changer for us (I'm 6'3), but if you plan to spend a lot of time inside or if you are significantly taller than me, keep in mind that all campervans will feel cozy.We're crazy about Merv. He has his quirks—he is a vintage vehicle!—so if your vacation plans are to get from points A to B as quickly as possibly, Merv probably isn't for you; however, if you like to take it easy, soak in the sights, stop at viewpoints, and enjoy the journey, he's a perfect fit. If you're done with the mountains for a minute, Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park is also neat; it's one of the only island camp sites I can think of in Alberta!Closer to Edmonton, there are some great family-friendly camping opportunities within an hour or two (or less) of the city; Devon, Wabamun Lake, Sylvan Lake, Crimson Lake, Long Lake, and Elk Island, for example, all offer camping that you can easily reach in a regular weekend. Another favourite of ours is camping near Pembina, where you can rent tubes and float down the river.We have also done a lot of camping into BC and Idaho/Montana/Washington (and further south) if you are interested in leaving the province. It has nature's A/C, also known as "vent windows" ;)

How does the fridge run in this campervan?
R.
The fridge runs on either the attached propane tank or electricity--if you are at a campsite with plugins, you can use the cord we provide to plug in at an outlet. We try to remember to turn it on the night before we leave (or before you pick it up) to get it started on cooling off, too!

Does this van have a washroom or shower?
R.
Nope! We purposely chose a van without a toilet as we didn't like the idea of one right beside the bed, like in some vans we saw. The other pro to this is you don't have to worry about black water, gray water, dumping, etc., which was great for us as we like the freedom to get up and go whenever and wherever we want!

Does his van have water?
R.
Yes--sort of! It has a small sink inside that draws from a tank that we will fill and empty for you, and the waste water runs out the side of van through a hose attachment. The sink is a hand pump sink, and it's really only useful for brushing your teeth, etc... You wouldn't want to wash dishes in there as it's small and you'd splash on the floor and cupboards, but it is still handy to have nonetheless! We recommend you bring your own drinking water, still, however.

Hey folks! My wife and I got into the "van life" on a bit of a whim about 9 years ago when we decided to take one last big trip before my wife started grad school. We purchased our first van, packed up our dog, and drove down to Arizona and back up to the prairies through a mix of in-land desert and the west coast, and had the time of our lives. We became hooked on how easy and fun it was to hop in and go and how much flexibility it gave us in where we chose to stop and sleep. We are now on our second van, and we are so excited to be able to let others in on the joys of van camping! Cheers, and happy trails :)
