Renters beware. I’ve used Outdoorsy before and had a stellar experience, but this particular trip was a nightmare. After returning the van, I was blindsided with nearly $500 in surprise charges — all based on stretched interpretations of the rental terms or contradicting instructions I received from the host.The compost toilet: One of the biggest reasons I choose a campervan over traditional camping is the convenience of having a bathroom onboard. Before the trip, the host messaged me asking if I wanted the toilet set up, warning that I’d be responsible for emptying it. I agreed, because peace of mind while traveling matters. I followed the YouTube video instructions she sent and emptied the waste tank. Despite this, she charged me $150 for minor remnants and a bit of toilet paper. It felt like a trap: offer a toilet to boost the listing, then punish renters for using it.Deep cleaning fee for leaving dishes — I was charged $200 for a “deep cleaning” because I left dirty dishes in the sink. The written rental agreement said nothing about dishes, and the binder in the van specifically stated they could be left in the sink. To be clear: the van was returned tidy — no trash, no mess — just dishes left, as permitted. We even drove the van home before dropping it off at her house so we could use our vacuum on it, since the one she provided ran out of battery.

I am sorry to hear you were not happy with fees charged from your rental. I am far from opportunistic as this is the first time I have ever charged a renter for any issues and I try to make it super fair.The van was returned in the worst condition I have ever had it returned in. I wish I could attach photos to show how disgusting you left the dishes in the sink and not to mention the foul smell coming from it. As shown in your photo, it says if you cannot clean the dishes all the way to leave them on the sink. You did not even make an attempt to clean these dishes and left tons of food in the sink.

Kellsey was an amazing host and the Minty Fresh is one awesome van. Communication with Kellsey was fantastic. She sent me helpful information prior to the trip and was easy to communicate with throughout the duration of my trip. The van was better than described and had everything I needed to be ready at my campsite. I highly recommend and will def rent again with Kellsey!
