Get lost in nature while you're here; visit Superior National Forest. This huge park covers over 250,000 acres of dense forests on the edge of Lake Superior. Hiking is excellent here, with over 2,000 miles of trails to explore. With many lakes throughout the park as well as Lake Superior, watersports are also possible, and there are fishing piers and boat launches to make activities a little easier. There are several campgrounds in Superior National Forest, including the centrally located Fall Lake Campground. If you have a campervan rental near Minneapolis, consider stopping by Fort Snelling State Park. This park is situated within Minneapolis' city limits and features acres of swamps and forests along the Minnesota River and Snelling Lake. Fort Snelling State Park is perfect for escaping the busy city, with 18 miles of trails that run by the river and around the lake. Other favorite pastimes include boating and fishing. The park is ideal for a picnic, with lots of riverside picnic tables. There are a few campgrounds just south of the park, which are great places to camp for a night or two while you're enjoying the attractions in Minneapolis. Head farther south and spend some time at Whitewater State Park. A short drive east of Rochester, this park consists of rugged cliffs and canyons along the Whitewater River. This park is perfect for challenging hikes. While trekking across the area, watch out for resident birds; over 200 different species live in the park, including bald eagles and Louisiana waterthrush. The river's also great for fishing, and there's a swimming beach, too. There are also several campgrounds in Whitewater State Park. RV campsites are available, and restrooms, showers, and a dump station are on-site. There are many gorgeous lakes worth discovering when you rent a campervan in western Minnesota, and some of the best can be found at Maplewood State Park. This park features eight different lakes separated by lush grasslands and dense forests. One of these lakes, Lake Lida, features a swimming beach, and several lakes are suitable for boating, fishing, and kayaking. There are over 40 miles of trails that loop around the park, and while walking, watch out for local wildlife, including chipmunks, raccoons, and deer. Camping at Maplewood State Park is also possible, and visitors can choose from several lakeside campgrounds.
