Sebastian was absolutely the best in all aspects of the process. He spent time to show me everything.

Sebastian was fantastic and took the time to show us how everything worked…took about 45 minutes. We have a lot of experience towing trailers, so that part didn’t take long for us, but for people with less experience, there are several little tips and tricks (and some important safely considerations).
On that note, I probably wouldn’t recommend the Basecamp for someone who has never towed anything simply because it’s a very expensive piece of equipment, it sticks up tall enough to completely block rearview mirror visibility and to catch low overhanging branches and it’s big enough to require a bit of room to turn it around and/or some backing up skills. Might be better to rent a small trailer and get some practice first.
That said, if you have a little towing experience and the right vehicle, the Basecamp tows really nicely – smooth as silk, actually. And it has great trailer breaks, lights, tires, safety stuff, etc.
Okay, with the disclaimer out of the way, here are some pros and cons of our camping experience:
PROS: It’s a super cozy camping option when the weather sucks. We camped on the northern California coast and it was alternately windy, foggy, cold and rainy. We also camped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the temps dropped into the 20s. The heater kept us nice and toasty. We never would have done this trip in November with a tent or even with our truck pop up camper.
Not only is it warm and dry inside, but the interior is elegant and just fun to hang out in. The kitchen has tons of storage and is well designed, so cooking inside is easy peasy.
Another huge advantage of the Basecamp is that you can leave it set up, unhitch it from the truck, lock the hitch, and drive to a nearby trailhead without a lot of fuss. (Once you are familiar with the process this only takes a few minutes).
The shower works well, even as an outdoor shower which we used as much as possible to avoid filling the blackwater tank. And the potty seems to work well also. We stayed at campgrounds with restrooms, so didn’t really use this feature too much, but it’s nice to know it’s there…
Energy-wise, the solar panels work great to top up the battery during the day while you are out hiking or exploring. We used the propane A LOT because it was so cold and because we cooked breakfast and dinner almost every day. So, we went through two propane tanks over the course of our 9 day trip. Fortunately, we brought the one from our BBQ as a backup.
CONS: Needs a wine rack in the kitchen…but we managed somehow. :)
Also, not an issue for us, but if you are over six feet tall, you’re feet might hang over the edge of the bed. If your partner is also tall, you might be playing footsies at some point because the opening at the end of the bed is in the center third of the space.
Speaking of the bed, it is very firm (just the way one of us likes it). A couple sleeping pads (we used the eggcrate kind) worked great for us.
Finally, the outdoor shower doesn’t seem to have a place to hang the shower head (maybe there is one and we just didn’t find it), but nothing a couple bungees or straps can’t fix.
Neutral: We had some condensation inside on the windows in the damp conditions at the coast, but other than obstructing the view through the windows in the morning, it wasn’t a problem and dried up soon after sunrise when the humidity dropped. In the drier areas we traveled, we experienced little or no condensation.
We didn’t use the side tent, but I think it would have made doing various chores like unpacking and packing hiking gear and changing clothes easier…at least for a winter camping trip. We spent a fair amount of time removing the cushions to access storage, setting up and taking down the tables, etc. With the tent extension, we could have stored more stuff outside, left the bed set up, and so forth.
Another storage strategy we found helpful was to store the trash bag and recycle bag in the bathroom.
Overall the basecamp was perfect and Sebastian was perfect host with all the info we needed. Great kitchen. Good storage. Cozy and private little cave when ready to come inside. Nice lighting. Not glaring like in our truck camper.
