This unit was perfect for our trip to drive around and explore the island of Maui Dec 30-Jan 3!Campsites: The first night we camped at the Hosmer campground, got out early to watch the last sunrise of 2019 in Haleakana Nat'l Park hovered amidst the Red Hill Rocks to get out of the cold blowing wind! This is a must! The entire sky glows above the clouds. However, if you stay at the Hosmer campground, you are already inside the park and may freely go directly up the mountain to the summit bldg and do not need to go through the hassle of getting the online reservation that is required if you approach the gate before 7am! Diane says that the sunsets are great here too! (no reservation needed for those!)
On the southwest side, Camp Olowalu was full so we pulled in late to a roadside beach site along 30 just south of there and were just feet from shore . The next night we found a pretty cool spot just to the west of Baby Beach in Sprecksville to set us up near the beginning of The Road to Hana off of 36, also right on the ocean (see photos ). It was amazing to watch the sunrise and local fisherman going at it in the tidepools and along the beach.
Parking: Kids wanted to jump off cliff at Black Rock Beach on the west side. warning....it took about an hour to find a parking spot with this rig. they have public ramp parking on the north side and all other spots outside were for hotel guests or compact! We went south to the spot across rd from Mariott and walked up beach. ended up to be a nice beach walk in front of the fancy hotels to get there, snorkeling was ok with a few fish and one turtle sighting on other side of cliff. great boogie boarding at Hanakaoo point at sunset when we walked back to parking spot!Unit: The RV was very nice and the largest you could rent to be driving around Maui and all its harrowing turns and tight-fitting parking spots. It was a bit cramped for 4 persons and all our luggage for living space but would not part with all the amenities that you needed for anyplace you decided to travel having the bathroom w/ shower, larger fridge, spray hose outside and generator aboard. We were only in it at night outside of driving. It was really nice that the front seats turned around to use the table together. we ended up leaving the back bed down and stored luggage underneath and up into cubbies and worked out nice to lay down at any time during our traveling. The fridge was larger than the mini and worked great! Most other vans are older and do not have a working fridge. You really didn't need a cooler unless you were beaching and planned to carry one there. We did have the cooler on the back rack but used that for storing our extra jugs of drinking water and wet stuff from beach. We didn't cook much but coffee because we enjoyed stopping at all the food trucks and places on our route! Our favorite was the ambiance of Paia Bowls & then lunch at Aloha Aina Barbecue out in the middle of nowhere overlooking the ocean just b4 the Garden of Eden Arboretum entrance on the road to Hana about mile 10.It was nice to have the bathroom and sinks for washing our fresh fruit from the markets and stands & without being forced to stop for bathroom breaks! We had the back cargo rack for the cooler, boogie boards and beach chairs. It was handy but added a bit of length to the unit for it to be tough to find places to park in the town parking lots along the way, but it was worth the trouble since you would have otherwise had to store all that inside the camper and would be very sandy and wet. You may be able to get by with strapping some stuff to the bike rack if you chose not to have the rack placed on the rig for your journey.
We were pleasantly surprised how well it handled driving the curvy road to Hana. The free beach sites were our favorite camp spots as they were more secluded and could hear the ocean all night long. The stars are so bright here! We experienced all but one sunset/sunrise at a different beach or mountain top. You really have to plan ahead if you wish to stay at the few campsites in any of the county or state parks suited for RV campers. Also, watch out for the days they are closed for maintenance every week. They also get booked up very quickly. Waianapanapa State Park (northeast) & Kīpahulu Campground (east) were both booked but looked like nice places to camp on the Road to Hana.Overall, we were sure glad to make the decision to use this traveling hotel for our trip! We were with our teenage kids and they loved the beach camping experience and we loved the ease of being able to change our plans as we went if we found something else we wanted to do or if weather pushed us to another area. We didn't have to "go back" to our lodging site every day backtracking but used the time to travel to the next overnight experience! Even though this unit was a bit more pricey than the others similar, i would choose again. We saved money overall due to that we did not have to rent a hotel & vehicle. We did look at staying Airbnb as another option of stay but quickly found that the addt'l flat rate fees sure added up quickly for our planned 1-2 max night at any one location (most were 2 night min).
We used this unit to stay 4 nights on Maui. I wish we had planned at least another day or two on Maui. We had a great time on this beautiful island! We moved on to Kauai to camp another 6 nights there in a 4WD pickup with a pop-up tent on the rooftop, fully equiped with camping/beach gear with another outdoorsy host!We did not have all that much time to investigate on our own due to the decision to visit within a month of our trip, so lots of great spots were booked due to the holiday. We enjoyed having the adventure of finding our next spot each day but it would have been really helpful to have a specific custom guide or map inside this unit for "go-to" recommended beaches/spots to camp at that best suits this RV Camper unit. There is plenty of tent camping spots, but most you have to park vehicle in lot and have tent away from your vehicle and pretty much voids the purpose of camping when you have to camp in a parking lot. Diane, the owner, was very accommodating and helpful if you asked but we didn't know how difficult if you didn't have reservations months in advance! I hope this long review helps the next family who is hesitant to choose to go this adventurous gypsy route! We loved it! We plan to do this again on our return visits!
