Outdoorsy stated that we would be picking up the van on Main Street in Jackson, a short taxi ride from the airport. I messaged the owner and he gave me another remote address and told us to Uber to it. There were no Ubers available, only Taxis. It was about a 20 minute drive and cost close to 100 bucks. I got a business card from the kind taxi driver and asked if we called him, would he be willing to pick us up when we dropped the van off a week later, because we had a flight to catch and he knew where the location was.
Outdoorsy also indicated we would get a walk-around to familiarize us with the vehicle. We met no one. The keys were on the floorboard waiting for us and that was it. I can drive most anything but all vehicles have controls in different places along with other special features. There is a rigged button on the steering column that seemed to affect the wipers. Really, a walk around would have been helpful.
The engine was cold natured and idled too low. I could not keep it running even after letting it idle a while. OK, so I will play with the gas at stop signs and such if needed. It is just an inconvenience when you have a clutch, brake and gas pedal to contend with to keep going and it is very worrisome if you are stopped on an incline. If it dies on you, turn the key off then re-crank it. The van was also low on gas, was not washed and now I was feeling apologetic to my wife for renting it but it was too late to change anything. I was determined to not let this ruin our bucket list vacation.
When we finally camped in it, we went to the owners manual to see how to make a bed of the rear seat and raise the top. The instructions and pictures were not like what we were dealing with but we managed. If you are a senior like us, the large bed up in the top is really a nice size... but you will not be able to climb up into it. The rear seat laid flat but we had to use luggage and some pillows that were left in the van to extend our laying surface and it was uncomfortable.
About the van: I love vintage and it was exactly that. It is weak for climbing hills but I expected it. I drive a stick very well and know what to do to get by. Someone unexperienced, navigating inclines could be in trouble. There is nothing in the description about the van on Outdoorsy that lets a person think it will have difficulty traversing a lot of the area where it will be driven. My wife and I named it Otis and just knew we were going to be intimate with all of his quirks before it was over. One good thing I can say, is Otis does not use much gas.
The van needs maintenance. On our first leg of use, the oil buzzer and warning light sounded. When we arrived at our first airbnb destination in Victor, I let it sit for a few hours and then checked the oil level. It was over a quart low. I messaged the owner about it and asked what weight of oil he used. He said it was because I took the van over the pass. I am not a chief mechanic but I am a gearhead... I could either buy oil or burn it up. I felt like my hitting him up was an imposition. I bought 2 quarts and left one in the rear storage of the van for the next person.
The left rear tire has a slow leak. I noticed it over a few days and added air to keep us going. I expected to be changing a flat tire but we got lucky.
The Speedometer/Odometer does not work. On travel to our next Airbnb location, our phones had no service and we could not use our Waze app. We had printed the directions prior to the trip but it was at night and it was really a struggle to get there. I will write of that ordeal, next. It would have been nice to have a working Odometer to gauge distance.
Concerning the ordeal, there was a very dangerous issue we had with the van that will also be a danger to the next person if not fixed. The headlights go out! Try driving a mountain road with no lights! In a frantic means of discovery, I managed to hold the bright light switch lever while steering to be able to see but it was a bright lights in the eyes situation to oncoming travelers. If I let go of the lever, I had no lights. At the end of our trip, I messaged the owner about the situation and did not get a response.
I messaged and asked the owner if we could leave the van on Main Street and he replied that it needed to be returned where we got it... There goes another 100 bucks. Thankfully after a phone call, that kind taxi driver was there at the location waiting on us!
We did end our 7 day vacation intimate with Otis for sure. We got thumbs up a lot, especially from other VW Van drivers. We loved the beauty of the area and our vacation was not ruined.
This is a long read but I felt I needed to write it for the next person so they can better get a feel of what to expect and have more information to decide before renting.

My wife, daughter (she is age 11) and I rented this van for a week-long trip to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone. We had a blast in the van. It felt like the perfect vehicle to visit these national parks. It was our first time renting on Outdoorsy or renting an RV type of vehicle (we normally just car camp) and the extra space inside was a game changer. My wife and daughter could hang out in the back while we drove and I was up front listening to my own music. It was a lot of fun and very cool and gave us the space we needed for living and sleeping. Unforutnately now I want to buy one.

The owner was easy to coordinate pickup and drop-off which was near Wilson, WY. The van was perfect for our group of 4 to camp in. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the van manual transmission was not for someone with casual stick experience. It took a few minutes to warm up when it was started cold, and we had to keep it in a specific RPM range (2k-4k) or the engine oil pressure light would come on; it took a little practice especially driving over passes in Yellowstone (nothing over 5% grade recommended-it goes pretty slow up-slope when in it's "happy" RPM range). But once we got the hang of it, she got us from A to B and was fun to sleep in.
It was stocked with a camp stove, plates, lighters/matches, flashlight and some misc. camping gear. Would recommend as long as you have experience with a stick and don't mind the slow climbs going upslope.

This was a great running van mechanically, especially considering it’s age & the terrain we covered while using it. The large tires were an asset, as well. Unfortunately, neither the refrigerator or the inside stove or sink were working, but the owner provided a very nice camping stove for us to use. The van was not very clean when we picked it up, but there was a full tank of gas for us to begin our adventures.

The van was great. It was comfortable and efficient. It was a topic of conversation at campgrounds. Its small size allowed us to drive on the smaller roads where larger RVs are not allowed. Dan was responsive to any texts I sent him and was friendly.

Had the most incredible experience in Wyoming with the VW. She’s definitely seen her days however she brought so much charm to our adventure. We did have a little trouble towards the end however Josh was very accommodating. I would easily rent this beauty out again.

Had an amazing time visiting the Tetons and Yellowstone in Josh’s Westy! It ran great and was the dream vehicle for checking out the parks.

I booked this van on Outdoorsy. The owner, Joshua, texted me immediately after I booked to tell me that the van was already booked and I couldn't have it. His communication was all of 2 words -- "It's booked". No explanation, no apology. Bummer, but I understood, he perhaps simply hadn't updated the availability on Outdoorsy.

Gautam, I never approved your booking. Not my fault . Outdoorsy’s .

Had a great time driving around Idaho in Joshua’s van! Not a super strong engine (understandable for a 1991 van) so struggles to get up grades more than about 5%; would be good to keep in mind for planning trip routes. The upgraded sound system in the van is equipped with Bluetooth which was a pleasant surprise. There are also a couple cigarette lighters to plug into for charging phones, etc.. The van sometimes took a little love to get it started after sitting overnight but once the engine was warmed up it ran great.
The look and feel of the van is great, got tons of compliments on it from passers-by!

The sticky manual transmission takes a bit of getting used to but the Fun Wagon served us well on a four day, three night tour through most of Yellowstone with a partial day in Grand Teton. Joshua had a lot of extra gear in the van on arrival that wasn’t listed; the portable propane camp stove was by far the most useful each day. Overall a great experience if you’re into vintage van life and looking for a unique way to explore Yellowstone!

Great time! A Westfalia is an adventure all in and of itself. Perfect vehicle for a trip through Yellowstone.
