Whether you’re a seasoned RVer or a take the rig out on the weekend kind of family, learning how to cook in an RV kitchen provides a bit of a learning curve.
Like most of us, we understand that maneuvering around an RV kitchen is a one-man job.
How do we make it work? Are there any tips or strategies? Yes!
I am here to assure you that I have found a system that works for me and you can too. As a simple example, I’ll walk you through how I made cookies for a recent holiday party.
1. Get out all the ingredients before you start cooking.
One of the strategies I learned pretty quickly was to get out all of the ingredients for a meal before I fire up the stovetop.
There is a pull-out table under the microwave that I utilize every single time I cook. I usually put all my ingredients there so I can see what I’m working with. I end up moving the ingredients around as I need to while cooking, but having them out beforehand is helpful.
2. Utilize every inch of space.
One of my favorite things about our rig is how much space there is in the kitchen, despite how small the kitchen can seem.
I mentioned the pullout under the microwave, but we also have a pop up table next to the sink and a tabletop for one side of the sink which creates more counter space.
I would suggest getting to know your kitchen. Besides the counter, what other areas can I use to aid me while I’m cooking?
Not going to lie, when I have multiple pans going in and out of the oven I’ll utilize the dinette table for extra space as well. When your living room is your kitchen is your office, you can use it however works best for you!
3. Get a little creative.
I found that placing a few things on the stovetop when it’s not in use is a bit tricky with the grills. So, we started using a large cutting board. We simply place the cutting board over the stovetop and bam! Extra solid counter space.
When we first moved in, we removed the old TV cords and cables from over the microwave because we would never use that space for watching TV. What were we going to do with the new found space?
Well, our pantry was one small cabinet, so I decided to get a little fancy and create an open pantry. Now, that space is used as active pantry space and I love it! Necessity is, in fact, the mother of invention.
No matter what size rig you have, the kitchen always seems to be a bit tight. Learning how to cook in an RV kitchen can be frustrating at first, but when you figure out a system that works well for you it becomes enjoyable; maybe even something you look forward to.
So, whether it’s Hamburger Helper or a small Christmas dinner, have fun with it.
